Anxiety and Depression

At one time or another, all of us have feelings of worry, nervousness, or uneasiness in our daily lives. But when the worry becomes hard to control, prominent, and persistent (present for more than 6 months), it may begin to have a serious negative impact on our daily activities and well-being. 

Depression can be a devastating illness that affects individuals and those who share their lives. Fortunately, antidepressant medications can help relieve depression for most people.

BuSpar

BuSpar is an anti-anxiety medication which acts on the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin to calm the mind. It is considered an effective treatment for mild to moderate anxiety or tension, though should not be used to treat everyday stress and worry. It may take one to two weeks before you experience the full benefits of BuSpar treatment.

Paxil

Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride) is a relatively new antidepressant drug introduced in U.S.A. in 1993. Paxil is a member of the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) drug family (along with Prozac and Zoloft). These drugs are quite effective in helping relive symptoms of major depression without causing the harmful side effects known by the older tricyclic antidepressant medications (TCAs).

Prozac

Prozac (fluoxetine) medication, is an SSRI antidepressant drug approved in 1987 by the FDA and is presently available for treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa. Prozac is thought to work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Prozac is a type of the serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) family, such as Zoloft (sertraline) and Paxil (paroxetine).

Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin is clinically proven to effectively treat depression with a low risk of sexual side effects. Wellbutrin has also been used in an off-label capacity (not specifically approved for, but observed to be effective) to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and to decrease the sexual side effects caused by other antidepressants. Bupropion, the chemical name for this medication, is additionally sold under the brand name Zyban to help stop the urge to smoke.

Zoloft

Zoloft (sertraline hydrochloride) is an anti-depressant medication known as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Like other antidepressants in this class (such Paxil and Prozac), Zoloft helps relieve depression without the bad side effects that many patients experience with the older tricyclic antidepressants and MAO inhibitors.

Although the way Zoloft works for depression, panic disorder, OCD, and PTSD is not completely understood, what is understood is that Zoloft is a medicine that helps correct the chemical imbalance of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a naturally occurring chemical in the brain that is involved in the transmission of messages between nerve cells.
